Nutella
Nutella® has been on the breakfast tables of millions of people around the world for more than 60 years, spreading good moments to start the day. A slice of bread with Nutella® tastes great. Thanks to their unique and inimitable recipe, Nutella® has become the most popular and iconic hazelnut cocoa spread in the world. Nutella's unmistakable recipe is the same worldwide. It combines seven carefully selected quality ingredients, ensuring its singular creaminess and intense flavour. The highest quality standards are assured for every plant in the world that produces Nutella®. The Ferrero Company indeed has over the years demonstrated its commitment to environmental sustainability, and is a leading example for many other firms. In 2015, it joined the Palm Oil Innovation Group, and it supported the Amsterdam Declaration "In Support of a Fully Sustainable Palm Oil Supply Chain by 2020".
When Michele Ferrero, the son of a small town pastry maker, decided to follow in his father’s footsteps, he started from humble beginnings. Nutella is sometimes called an “austerity recipe”, as at the time, in the 1950’s, the Second World War and rationing had left chocolate in short supply in Italy.
Adding hazelnuts, which were cheaper and more readily available than cocoa, made the spread much more affordable. But it wasn’t all the idea of Ferrero, the Turin-based makers of Nutella. In fact, the city has been known for producing hazlenut-infused chocolate since the times of Napeleon.Hazelnut chocolate cream, or crema gianduia, was invented in the city in 1806, when Napoleon’s wars in South America made cocoa beans so astronomically expensive in the Savoy kingdom that local chocolatiers were going out of business – until they hit on the idea of using local hazelnuts to make their chocolate go further.
The amount of Nutella produced in a year weighs as much as the Empire State building, and the hazelnuts used to make the spread over a two-year period could fill a basket of the size of the Colosseum.

A brief history of Nutella: After World War II, cocoa was extremely scarce. Ferrero, originally from Piedmont in Italy, turned this tricky problem into a smart solution, creating a sweet paste made from hazelnuts, sugar and just a little of the rare cocoa. The ancestor of Nutella® was born. In 1946 the sweet paste of the first recipe was shaped into a loaf that could be sliced and spread on bread, named after a local carnival character. In 1951 the 'Giandujot' paste was transformed into a creamy new product that was easier to spread named SuperCrema.
In 1964 the recipe was improved and the first-ever jar of a new hazelnut and cocoa cream was created, a name that today is synonymous with the spread & smile: Nutella®. With its iconic design, in 1965 Nutella® was launched in Germany and a year later in France. On February 5th 2007, all Nutella® lovers were called to unite by the Italo-American blogger Sara Rosso. Since then, World Nutella® Day has been celebrated every year. On May 31st 2017 Nutella® opened its first restaurant in Chicago, a special place where all Nutella® fans can enjoy a unique experience by choosing delicious recipes from a wide menu.
